Rules of the Jam

General Rules

  1. At all times participants must abide by the inclusiveness policy and code of conduct – support and respect your fellow jammers

  2. Participants may submit any number of entries.

  3. A solo entry defines one person working on their own

  4. A team entry defines two or more people working together

  5. Works can be presented in any medium: film, art, literature, comics, games etc

  6. Works must relate one or more of the themes

  7. Works can be drafts, prototypes, proof of concepts or fully completed entities

  8. Works can be digital, physical, and/or anything in between (if physical and you are participating remotely, take photos to share with us)

  9. Works must be accompanied by a paradata document

  10. You may use external base-code, programs, libraries or assets provided you comply with their copyright and distribution requirements and that they are declared in your documentation

  11. Participants must not harm or disturb heritage to collect or construct their outcomes

  12. All outcomes must be safe and suitable for display to the public

  13. The Heritage Jam reserves the right to change the rules at their discretion

  14. The Heritage Jam reserves the right not to accept or display any work which violates the rules

Judging Criteria

  1. Innovation, creativity and originality

  2. Interpretation of the theme: how well or innovatively the theme has been interpreted

  3. Technical merit: complexity of skill behind your method and production

  4. Artistic merit: quality and visual impact of your piece

  5. Paradata quality: the quality of the paradata document submitted alongside the work



Inclusiviness Policy

  • The Heritage Jam is based on the values of collaboration, innovation, inclusion and experimentation. We strive to provide a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment – both on-site and online – where everyone is free to express themselves regardless of gender, sexual orientation , ability, appearance, ethnicity, citizenship, socioeconomic status, religious beliefs or age.

  • Whilst the Heritage Jam encourages freedom of speech and open activity it should be noted that discrimination or any form of exclusion will not be tolerated. The Heritage Jam reserves the right to refuse and / or remove content which violates these principles. The Heritage Jam is not liable for anyone’s specific views and opinions.

  • If at any time you are uncomfortable with the conduct, practices or outcomes of The Heritage Jam, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our committee or fill out the feedback form.

  • If you observe someone who is embodying the spirit of inclusiveness and contributing to building a welcoming community please let us know via an email.

Code of Conduct

This‭ ‬code‭ ‬of‭ ‬conduct‭ ‬outlines‭ ‬our‭ ‬guidelines ‬for‭ ‬all‭ ‬those‭ ‬who‭ ‬participate‭ ‬in‭ ‬our‭ ‬community,‭ ‬as‭ ‬well‭ ‬as‭ ‬the‭ ‬consequences‭ ‬for‭ ‬unacceptable‭ ‬behavior. We‭ ‬invite‭ ‬all‭ ‬those‭ ‬who‭ ‬participate‭ ‬in‭ THJ ‬to‭ ‬help‭ ‬us‭ maintain these guidelines and ‬create‭ ‬safe‭ ‬and‭ ‬positive‭ ‬experiences‭ ‬for‭ ‬everyone. If‭ ‬you‭ ‬see‭ ‬someone‭ ‬who‭ ‬is‭ ‬making‭ ‬an‭ ‬extra‭ ‬effort‭ ‬to‭ ‬ensure‭ ‬our‭ ‬community‭ ‬is‭ ‬welcoming,‭ ‬friendly,‭ ‬and‭ ‬encourages‭ ‬all‭ ‬participants‭ ‬to‭ ‬contribute‭ ‬to‭ ‬the‭ ‬fullest‭ ‬extent,‭ ‬please let us know through our THJ feedback form. If you see inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour please get in contact with a committee member on the day, or alternatively contact us via email, or let us know through our THJ feedback form.

  • ‏Appropriate ‬Behavior

    • We wish for THJ participants to exercise‭ ‬consideration‭ ‬and‭ ‬respect‭ ‬in‭ their ‬speech‭ ‬and‭ ‬actions, attempt‭ ‬collaboration‭ ‬before‭ ‬conflict, and refrain‭ ‬from‭ ‬demeaning,‭ ‬discriminatory,‭ ‬or‭ ‬harassing‭ ‬behavior‭ ‬and‭ ‬speech. We also expect the same consideration and respect to be applied to content created during the THJ event.

    • Be‭ ‬mindful‭ ‬of‭ ‬your‭ ‬surroundings‭ ‬and‭ ‬of‭ ‬your‭ ‬fellow‭ ‬participants.‭ ‬Alert‭ ‬community‭ ‬leaders‭ ‬if‭ ‬you‭ ‬notice‭ ‬a‭ ‬dangerous‭ ‬situation,‭ ‬someone‭ ‬in‭ ‬distress,‭ ‬or‭ ‬violations‭ ‬of‭ ‬this‭ ‬Code‭ ‬of‭ ‬Conduct,‭ ‬even‭ ‬if‭ ‬they‭ ‬seem‭ ‬inconsequential.

  • Unacceptable‭ ‬Behavior

    • Unacceptable‭ ‬behaviors‭ ‬include:‭ ‬intimidating,‭ ‬harassing,‭ ‬abusive,‭ ‬discriminatory,‭ ‬derogatory‭ ‬or‭ ‬demeaning‭ ‬speech‭ ‬or‭ actions‭ ‬by‭ ‬any‭ ‬participant‭ ‬in‭ ‬our‭ ‬site location or‭ ‬online community,‭ ‬at‭ ‬all‭ ‬related‭ ‬events‭ ‬and‭ ‬in‭ ‬one-on-one‭ ‬communications‭ ‬carried‭ ‬out‭ ‬in‭ ‬the‭ ‬context‭ ‬of‭ ‬community‭ ‬business.‭ ‬On site locations ‬may‭ ‬be‭ ‬shared‭ ‬with‭ ‬members‭ ‬of‭ ‬the‭ ‬public‭; ‬please‭ ‬be‭ ‬respectful‭ ‬to‭ ‬all‭ ‬patrons‭ ‬of‭ ‬these‭ ‬locations.

    • Harassment‭ ‬includes:‭ ‬harmful‭ ‬or‭ ‬prejudicial‭ ‬verbal‭ ‬or‭ ‬written‭ ‬comments‭ ‬related‭ ‬to‭ ‬gender,‭ ‬sexual‭ ‬orientation,‭ age, ‬ability,‭ ‬appearance, ethnicity,‭ national origin, ‬citizenship, socioeconomic‭ ‬status,‭ ‬or‭ ‬religion‭; ‬deliberate‭ ‬intimidation,‭ ‬stalking‭ ‬or‭ ‬following‭; ‬harassing‭ ‬photography‭ ‬or‭ ‬recording‭; ‬sustained‭ ‬disruption‭ ‬of‭ ‬talks‭ ‬or‭ ‬other‭ ‬events‭; ‬inappropriate‭ ‬physical‭ ‬contact; ‬and‭ ‬unwelcome‭ ‬sexual‭ ‬attention.

  • Consequences‭ ‬of‭ ‬Unacceptable‭ ‬Behavior

    • Anyone‭ ‬asked‭ ‬to‭ ‬stop‭ ‬unacceptable‭ ‬behavior‭ ‬is‭ ‬expected‭ ‬to‭ ‬comply‭ ‬immediately.

    • If‭ ‬a‭ ‬community‭ ‬member‭ ‬engages‭ ‬in‭ ‬unacceptable‭ ‬behavior,‭ THJ staff ‬may‭ ‬take‭ ‬any‭ ‬action‭ ‬they‭ ‬deem‭ ‬appropriate,‭ ‬up‭ ‬to‭ ‬and‭ ‬including‭ ‬a‭ ‬temporary‭ ‬ban‭ ‬or‭ ‬permanent‭ ‬expulsion‭ ‬from‭ ‬the‭ ‬community‭ ‬without‭ ‬warning‭ (‬and‭ ‬without‭ ‬refund‭ ‬in‭ ‬the‭ ‬case‭ ‬of‭ ‬a‭ ‬paid‭ ‬event‭)‬.

  • ‏If‭ ‬You‭ ‬Witness‭ ‬or‭ ‬Are‭ ‬Subject‭ ‬to‭ ‬Unacceptable‭ ‬Behavior

    • If‭ ‬you‭ ‬are‭ ‬subject‭ ‬to‭ ‬or‭ ‬witness‭ ‬unacceptable‭ ‬behavior,‭ ‬or‭ ‬have‭ ‬any‭ ‬other‭ ‬concerns,‭ ‬please‭ ‬notify‭ a member of THJ staff in person or via email, or submit a written account via the THJ feedback form.

  • Addressing‭ ‬Grievances

    • If‭ ‬you‭ ‬feel‭ ‬you‭ ‬have‭ ‬been‭ ‬falsely‭ ‬or‭ ‬unfairly‭ ‬accused‭ ‬of‭ ‬violating‭ ‬this‭ ‬Code‭ ‬of‭ ‬Conduct,‭ ‬you‭ ‬should‭ ‬notify‭ a THJ member of staff ‬with‭ ‬a‭ ‬concise‭ ‬description‭ ‬of‭ ‬your‭ ‬grievance.‭ ‬

  • Scope

    • We‭ wish for‭ ‬all‭ ‬community‭ ‬participants‭ (‬contributors,‭ ‬sponsors‭, ‬and‭ ‬other‭ ‬guests‭) ‬to‭ ‬abide‭ ‬by‭ ‬this‭ ‬Code‭ ‬of‭ ‬Conduct‭ ‬in‭ ‬all‭ ‬THJ events – ‬online‭ ‬and‭ ‬in-person‭—‬as‭ ‬well‭ ‬as‭ ‬in‭ ‬all‭ ‬one-on-one‭ ‬or group communications‭ ‬pertaining‭ ‬to‭ ‬the event.

  • ‏License‭ ‬and‭ ‬attribution

  • Content Policy

    • The Heritage Jam is about innovation, experimentation collaboration and learning from each other – during and after the Jam. All Jammers are expected to share their outcomes by uploading their final submitted project alongside assets, source-code and paradata pertaining to construction. It is encouraged that jammers submit a short text file explaining the steps taken during construction and the necessary programs required to continue construction. Third party tools, libraries, engines and assets that are used for the game, but were not created during THJ may be omitted from the submission, however must be attributed as appropriate and clear instructions regarding how to obtain or purchase these resources must be included in the submission.

    • Outcomes are uploaded under the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Creative Commons license ( Meaning that the creators retain the IP of the outcome, thus retaining ownership of the original content. THJ retains a submitted copy which will be hosted on the website gallery and can be downloaded, modified and distributed for noncommercial purposes provided an attribution is attached.

  • THJ Research

    • The Heritage Jam strives to expand the knowledge basis of creation practices in heritage spaces. Research on site is primarily conducted via survey, or observation. THJ participants may choose to opt-out of interviews and observations by advising staff on the day, via email beforehand or by not taking the survey.

  • Modification

    • The Heritage Jam reserves the right to change, modify or make exceptions to all policies at will.
