Dr ARIS POLITOPOULOS
In his talk Dr Politopoulos will talk about the connection between video games and archaeology, the field colloquially known as archaeogaming, exploring various ‘historical’ video games, the way they portray the past, and how can archaeologists use them to communicate the past to a wider audience.
Dr ANGUS MOL
How can we tell interactive, non-linear (hi)stories? And how can we implement game design in thinking about ways we talk about the past? In this talk, Dr Mol will be talking about interactive narratives in relation to the past, and offer a crash course on Twine, the tool we will be using for the Game Jam part of the Heritage Jam!
SAAD MAQBOOL
In his talk, Saad will explore the virtual city as a cultural object that is in many ways reflective of the culture in which it is produced. Extending both manovich's (1998) ideas on navigable space and pearson's (2015) theory of video games as 'deviated architectures', he makes the argument that video game cities reflect simulations not only of space but of wider function, including mapping and even resolutely reinforcing the same power hierarchies. Further, numerous instances of fictional video game cities (see: 'los santos' in grand theft auto v) model from contemporary urban and city planning to enforce power structures within their virtual environments.

Dr Politopoulos will present the Past at Play Lab project that was conducted at Leiden University and the ancient board games that will be available for play sessions during the Heritage Jam!
